The upcoming 2009 events will all be held within 10 minutes of R&D facilities. The two events in June listed above will include many Merck Scientists from Rahway and West Point.

The event formats for 2009 are very similar. However, because the symposia are non-proprietary, scientists from multiple companies will be able to attend each event. For example, the Normandy Farms event has active and strong committee participation from Merck, Astrazeneca, GSK, BMS, Wyeth and J&J, who all have R&D facilities very close to Normandy Farms.

The Content Advisory Committee has stressed that scientists want and need creative ideas and input to fill the gaps that exist between the research and the tools and the available technologies. The Pharma are seeking in-depth conversations with suppliers to help influence the tools and technologies that are being developed.

For each event, the hotel or conference center is no more than 10 miles from the majority of big Pharma in that area. Thus, travel time and expenses have been eliminated and bus service will be provided from all local facility parking lots.

Schedule Update

The Merck Technology Symposium will be back in May, 2010 at the Ocean Place Conference Center in Long Branch, NJ. Due to travel restrictions resulting from the current economic situation and general restrictions within Pharmaceutical budgets, we have replaced the centralized R&D events this year with "local" R&D events. The two year cycle was also requested by Merck because the broad topics covered by the proprietary conference are currently better matched to a two year cycle.

The 2009 equivalents to the Symposia are the Life Science events at Normandy Farms and Edison in June. We are targeting those events to pick up at least 200 Merck scientists per day from West Point and Rahway, respectively. You will now also have a mix of over 100 scientists per day from other Pharmaceuticals (e.g., Wyeth, BMS, GSK). Attendee/Exhibitor ratios are also expected to be fairly similar to previous Merck events.
